IP66 Peristaltic Pump Buying Guide: Applications, Cost & IP68 Comparison

1.What IP66 Means for Peristaltic Pumps

IP66 is not marketing - it's two specific lab tests defined by IEC 60529. Many pump pages list "IP66" with no report number, no test condition, and no limit statement. For engineering and procurement, you need to know what it proves, and what it does NOT.

What IP66 Actually Proves:

First 6 - Dust Tight: Complete protection against dust. Test: 8 hours in a dust chamber with active vacuum. No dust ingress that affects operation. The pump drive enclosure must be fully sealed.

Second 6 - Powerful Water Jets: Protected against 12.5 L/min water jets at 3 meters distance for at least 3 minutes from all angles. This is the hose-down test for washdown, rain, and plant cleaning.

In U.S. terms, IP66 = NEMA 4 / 4X performance for water and dust. NEMA 4X adds the corrosion requirement IP doesn't cover.

What IP66 Does NOT Mean :

a. Not Submersible. IP66 will fail if submerged or standing in a flooded pit. For that you need IP67 [1m/30min] or IP68 [continuous immersion].

b. Not High-Pressure Steam Wash. IP66 uses 100 kPa low-pressure jets. Food & Bev close-range 80°C sanitizing needs IP69K [1450 psi, 80°C].

c. Not Condensation-Proof. IP66 is sealed tight, which can trap internal moisture.

2.CH616 IP66 High Flow Industrial Peristaltic Pump - Built for Harsh Washdown Environments

The Chonry CH616 is not a lab pump in an industrial box. It is a true IP66 / NEMA 4X high-protection peristaltic pump engineered for humid, dusty, and washdown production floors where standard IP31 pumps fail.

With a sealed die-cast aluminum housing, 5-inch graphical touchscreen, and a max flow of 12L/min [12000 ml/min], the CH616 delivers stable, long-term operation in food, chemical, and outdoor applications.

Why IP66 Matters? Competitors Say "Washdown" - We Prove It.

Many suppliers claim "washdown ready" without a certificate. The CH616 is IEC 60529 IP66 certified:

Dust-Tight : 8-hour dust chamber tested, no ingress.[6]

Water-Jet Proof : Withstands 12.5L/min powerful jets from all angles - equivalent to US NEMA 4 standard.[6]

Construction: Spray-coated die-cast aluminum, corrosion-resistant, with IP68 sealed cable glands - not standard plastic PG glands.

This means you can hose down the entire pump drive directly. No control cabinet needed.

One Pump, Four Modes - High Flow Performance

IP66-rated peristaltic pump units are suitable for demanding industrial environments where protection from dust and water exposure is important. Typical applications include chemical metering, wastewater treatment, food and pharmaceutical dosing, corrosion-inhibitor injection on offshore platforms, and temporary or mobile pumping systems. For example, an IP66 unit can be used for chemical dosing in a wastewater plant where splashing and washdown are common. However, IP66 protection does not make the pump suitable for immersion, and the actual tubing, pump head, motor, and enclosure materials must also be compatible with the process fluid and environment.

3.Get an Application Solution and Pump Selection Recommendation

Choosing the right peristaltic pump depends on more than flow rate. Tubing material, operating pressure, fluid compatibility, motor configuration, control requirements, IP rating, and the expected duty cycle can all affect long-term performance and cost.

If you are evaluating a pump for chemical dosing, wastewater treatment, food or pharmaceutical processing, corrosion-inhibitor injection, or mobile equipment, contact our engineering team for application-specific guidance.

Share your fluid type, required flow range, pressure, tubing size, operating hours, power supply, and control requirements, and our engineers can recommend a suitable pump configuration and explain the key specifications to consider. We can also help with application solutions, product selection, testing requirements, technical documentation, and spare-parts planning.

4.FAQ

A.Can an IP66 peristaltic pump be submerged or used underwater, and what maximum depth is safe?

No. An IP66 rating alone does not mean that a peristaltic pump can be submerged or operated underwater. Under IEC 60529, IP66 indicates protection against dust and powerful water jets, but it does not specify protection against immersion.

For underwater applications, the pump should have a specifically verified IP67 or IP68 rating:

IP67: suitable for temporary immersion under standardized conditions, typically up to 1 m of water depth for 30 minutes.

IP68: intended for continuous or prolonged immersion, but the maximum depth and immersion duration must be specified by the manufacturer. There is no universal safe depth for every IP68 device.

IP66: maximum safe immersion depth should be considered 0 m unless the manufacturer has separately tested and approved the complete pump assembly for immersion.

For a complete peristaltic pump, the enclosure rating is only part of the assessment. Cable glands, connectors, switches, display/control interfaces, motor seals, pump-head construction, and tubing connections can all affect underwater suitability.

Bottom line: If the application requires submersion, do not infer a safe depth from IP66. Request the manufacturer's immersion test report and specified operating depth/time for the complete pump. For outdoor washdown or heavy water spray without immersion, IP66 can be appropriate.

B.How do IP66 and IP68 differ for peristaltic pump applications, and when should you choose one over the other?

The main difference is water protection. An IP66-rated peristaltic pump is designed to protect the enclosure against dust and powerful water jets, making it suitable for applications involving splashing, washdown, or outdoor exposure. However, IP66 does not indicate protection against immersion.

An IP68-rated pump provides a higher level of protection against water ingress and is designed for continuous or prolonged immersion under manufacturer-specified conditions. The actual allowable depth and immersion time must be confirmed by the manufacturer because IP68 does not define one universal maximum depth.

Choose IP66 when the pump will remain above water but may experience rain, splashing, spray, or routine washdown. It is often sufficient for chemical dosing, wastewater treatment, food-processing areas, and general industrial installations.
